If you go to the NN 4 Series product page, and then look at the Starter Package photo, it looks like there's a tube or rod extending vertically from the bottom of the rotator. What is that? Thanks.

that is what you mount a Nodal Ninja on. LOL. A tripod center column.
Sorry, we are still improving on product shots.

I would have expected to see the top of a ball head there. Do people usually mount the NN directly on a tripod column?

I don't put any panoramic head on a ball head because ball heads are too difficult to level accurately. I put a leveler on the tripod column, and mount the rotator and head on top of that.

I always discourage use of ball head under a panoramic head as it's generally not design to support torque generated by fact that Camera will be far of gravity center of tripod once installed on panoramic head, so always best to install panoramic head directly on column of tripod or with an leveller in between.

Steve and Vincen, do you keep a separate tripod dedicated to pano shooting, or do you remove the ball head when you want to shoot panos?

    Hi,

I take my Feisol 3372LV mainly for panoshots and use my 055ProB with a three way head on top for normal shots.

I use tripod mainly only for panoshoot sessions. When I need to use for regular photography I screw on it a ballhead, takes few seconds, and remove it when I put back my panoramic head with EZ-II :)

I use a Manfrotto 055CX3 Carbon Fiber tripod, and have a short center column with a ball head attached for normal use. When I want to use a pano head, I mount a longer center column with a leveler on it, and attach my pano head to that. It only takes a few seconds to change the column, and I can do it ahead of time if I know I'm doing panos.
