RS-1 on top of pole panorama examples

Hello Forum,

In a short time the RS-1 became one of my favorit pano heads.
The reason for this is the combination of low weight, small size and the fact that you can shoot the zenith shot in NPP.
Having the option to shoot a zenith shot in NPP is very important when making a pano inside a building, of course with other lens ring panoheads this is often also possible but it requires some extra actions to shoot the zenith shot in NPP.

Here are a couple of panoramas from the PanoTools Meeting 2012 in Den Haag I made with a RS-1 on top of a Fanotec Series 2 pole with Tripod Adapter and a Feisol tripod (6 round shots + 1 zenith shot).

In the scene a lot of Nodal Ninja people are present, I am sure they will recognize themselves :-)

This is somewhat close to what I plan on achieving in a slightly bigger room (see my other thread in the Everything Else forum).

I have a few questions:

1. Do you think the same result would be achievable hand held, without a tripod?
2. You said 6+1 shots. What lens did you use?
3. Were you concerned about having people too close (re-stitching, cut limbs, etc.) from the center of the chappel in the two panos you made there?

These panos are very inspiring!

Hello Olivier,

1. If you can manage to keep the pole in a steady position then yes it is possible to shoot handheld. If you are not sure if you can keep the movement of the top of the pole within 2-3 cm or if you want to shoot bracketed, then you better use a tripod and tripod adapter (plus for bracketed shooting people who are willing to "freeze" when you do the shoot). Using a pole mounted to a tripod gives a much more relaxed shoot, this is especially important when shooting in crowded situation such as you describe in your other posting.

2. Shaved Tokina 10-17mm @ 14.5mm on Canon 5D

3. No not a moment, people didn't walk and kept their position, apart from this with 6 images around I have a huge overlap so it is easy to avoid errors on the stitch seems.
Btw, when using Smartblend most times no masking in the stitcher or photoshop is necessary.
