Lens Ring for proposed 8/15mm canon fisheye zoom

Message for Nick, are there any plans for you to make a lens ring for this new Canon lens thats coming out January 1st?

Don't hold your breath on that Jan 1st date. I spoke with Canon yesterday about this lens and the release date is still very fluid.

Nothing to do with NN at all. There are discussions about the Canon 8-15 mm fisheye lens on several forums since the first announcement about this new lens by Canon. Canon's estimated time of delivery January 2011. ??. Who knows.

But of cause NN users who want to buy this lens, right now are asking for availability of a lens ring. But: of course Nick is only able to produce one, having the original lens in his hands. Vincen and Badders were allowed to have a look through Canon's own equipment at the Photokina and to take a snapshot of the cameras back. That's all about info.

Like the new cars on motorshows, you can see them, take a seat and look inside, but you can order end of next year.

I was at Rick Sammon's (ricksammon.com) photo seminar a week or so ago. Yes, the local camera shops were represented quite well. A Canon rep was there too. I asked him about how much their new 8 - 15mm fisheye lens might cost. He said about $1,300 and expected release was 1st quarter 2011.

The reason that the new Canon 8-15mm Fisheye lens cost so much (Approx USD$1,300) is because it is Canon 'L' or professional lens series glass

Here are the MTF charts (Modular Transference Function) for the lens in Telephoto mode and Wide Angle mode.

The DARK Solid Blue and Black chart lines at the very top are laboratory performance tests data Sharpness and Contrast.
Meaning... Transference of light entering throught the lens front and projecting onto the camera sensor is almost 100% from lens center axis across the edge of glass/metal housing.
As measured horizontally across the lens glass surface from center mark 0 -> 21/11 edge of glass.

Both are between the 0.9 and 1.0 scale which means its performance is EXCELLENT.
The dark blue and black solid lines in the " 8mm fisheye Wide mode" are so far UP on the scale you can hardly see them along the 1.0 scale line.

This lens probably is the best of both worlds... being its a zoom and fisheye lens. No switching lenses
