Hi all,
I'm considering purchasing a NN5L kit to use for spherical panoramas using the Peleng 8mm fisheye lens http://www.peleng8.com/
Can anyone suggest a decent software package which will be able to utilise the severely warped images this lens creates and turn them into a usable spherical pano?
I will be using a Canon 1Ds3, so there should be plenty of resolution in the images to generate a decent looking image.

In case you are not aware, when using the Peleng with the NN5, parts of the panohead (upper rotator) will intrude into the right hand side of the image. This is inevitable, given the 180 fov. Only by using a ring mount such as the NN R1 or the NN180 would you get an unobstructed view (except for the tripod area, of course). You also waste half of the pixels of the full image frame. You should still get a roughly 7600 pixels wide 360x180 equirectangular panorama, which is good enough for fullscreen display. A 15mm fullframe fisheye would give you an equirectangular image of double the size. As well as Autopano Pro, other stitcher options would be Hugin (free) and PTGui.

Thankyou for that information John. I was not aware of that issue using the Peleng on the NN5.
What would your thoughts be on using the 16mm end of a 16-35mm lens instead?
A 16mm rectilinear lens will produce a 15600x7800 panorama, but you would need more shots: a minimum of 2 rows of 6 + nadir + zenith. (See http://www.vrwave.com/ for shooting configurations), though three rows are preferable to avoid having the image joins between two rows at the horizontal level where much of the interest in the panorama lies and where the poorer quality outer edges of the image would be used. Don't necessarily be put off from using the Peleng just by losing a little of the image frame on one side. There's plenty of overlap with 3 or 4 shots around.

Thanks again John. I might still get the Peleng and take the extra shot for overlap. Do you think I'd get away with 4 shots + nadir for a 360x180 pano?
This is really only out of curiousity as the spherical panos will only be for fun/personal use. The main use of the NN5 will be for paid panoramic landscape shots.
You should be able to manage with 3 shots around with the Peleng. You won't lose much more than 15¬? on the right hand side and you'll have 60¬? overlap anyway. Also worth mentioning is the flare performance of the lens. It's not good! See this example on the Worl Wide Panorama site: http://worldwidepanorama.org/worldwi...Spielberg.html. (View in fullscreen mode to see the flare in all its glory). Flare can be countered by shielding the lens from the sun in a duplicate shot and then merging the shots in Photoshop.

Oh that's alright then... 3 shots is easy enough. Yes, I have read about the flaring, but will work with the conditions to minimise any I might get. As I mentioned, it's for a bit of fun, so a bit of flare shouldn't concern me too much. Thanks again
Decided to not go for the Peleng at this point. Ordered myself a NN5L package and a new Canon 16-35mm f2.8. Much more useful in my line of work, and won't mind too much taking the extra few photos for a spherical. They will probably be infrequent.
Now to go test some stitching software. AutoPano seems to be the go... unless someone can convince me that PTGui is worth a try (never used it).

i think PTGui is worth a try if you want to learn much about stitching. But autopanogiga is a good one as well, but does a lot automatically.
I use both of them. You can download a rial from PTGui.
