Mac OS X Snow Leopard problems with panofiles for Quicktime Player 7 movies.

Hi everyone,

The new version of Snow Leopard with Quick Time Player X does not open old panoramafoto files of Quick Time player 7 with the suffix *.mov as made up with PTGui for example.

After having installed Snow Leopard with the installation disk, reopen the disk and install Quick Time 7 from the map optional installations. It will be placed to the map helpprograms in the map programs. You can run both versions on the computer. I have tried it yesterday.

Hi Heinz,

In all matters, personnaly I think you should forget quicktime format for publication of panoramas as it's now updated and no more supported by Apple so it won't be long before it completely disappears. I think products suck as KRPano do the job in a much better way with much more support and evolution

but i think many people as i have old files which they like to use in the future. I use autopanogiga as well, but i think in many concerns it is handy to learn with PTGui. I stay in contact with joost about this *.mov thing.

In my idea if you use PTGui and keep with your shots the pts project, it's pretty easy to reopen it when you want to generate a TIFF instead of a mov file for output or do I miss something ?

Hello Heinz,

To avoid future problems(*) with QTVR you could consider to transform all your old QTVR panos into Flash 10.
Doing this is very easy with Pano2VR and it can be done in batch mode.
The nice part is that Pano2VR don't remap and/or re-compress the 6 cube faces inside the QTVR pano but instead use them unaltered to build a flash movie.
So the speed of the conversion is high and there is no loss of quality.

(*) its a matter of time before QT 7 will be unsupported by Apple, they did the same trick with there support for Classic that was skipped after a few years so don't expect that QTVR will have a long life.

This threads need to be bumped before it gets lost and I wanted to expound on it a bit more.
Apple is no longer supporting Quicktime. We knew this was forth coming but has recently become more apparent with the new launch of Windows 7. The .mov files will not play in windows 64 bit operating systems. There are some tricky workarounds that may enable you to eventually play these outside a browser window but to the average user who simply wants to click and play this won't happen. Almost all PC's especially here in the US are coming out with the 64 bit operating systems. Even the recent grand opening of the Microsoft store here in Scottsdale had Windows 7 64 bit installed on every machine in the store. I had a chance to attend the grand opening and spoke one of the senior software developer of MS (Kevin Egan). He tried to setup a PC to play the .mov files but to no immediate avail without having to re-tweak underlying application settings.
So with the future of PC going to 64 bit those of us creating interactive panoramas should consider converting all .mov file to flash or other viewer.
Joost Nieuwenhuijse of PTGui tells us we can configure an external viewer such as devalvr or fspviewer in PTGui as a workaround. They too are looking to change their viewer.
We live in an ever changing industry.

Just to clarify it's QTVR format support that disappears from what I know. Quicktime is still supported both on Windows and Mac, but Apple silently removed QTVR format support from latest version of Quicktime (Quicktime X included with Snow Leopard) and will probably remove it quickly from Windows version.

I think that in all matters QTVR format was already nearly dead as it never really evolved, was not really promoted, not really compatible with large resolution panoramas and lack of support in browsers. So for now future is with Flash in my idea

wow, what a quick turn around on this forum

Devalvr and fspviewer are both windows programs, not running on a mac. Mac users should step to pano2VR to get flash version at this moment.

Is there a program out there or some sort of code that can covert an existing .mov file to flash? It would sure save a lot of work for some people.
Websites like www.IVRPA.org take .mov files and convert to flash on the fly - I'll have to ask Aldo their webmaster.

Hello Bill,

When you want a conversion on the fly then Aldo's player is a good solution.
Basicly a QTVR spherical pano is nothing more then a container for 6 cube faces so it is possible to take those cubes out of the QTVR and put them in a Flash wrapper.
A smart player, like Aldo's one, can do that on the fly.

Altough this will work for a simple pano (= single node pano without hotspots) you are stuck if you want to play a multi node QTVR pano with advanced options, then it is really better to convert the QTVR to a flash pano and add hotspots and all the advanced stuff you like.
As I mentioned a few postings above the conversion can be done easy, quick, and without any loss of quality with Pano2VR, I did it myself with hundreds of panos in batch sessions and never experienced problems.

Ups Bill,

seams to be a "real problem for the future", which can be solved easily with comments of your experienced users. Right now there is another good discussion on this problem. Today, 27.th of october with a lot of reactions, since 3rd of september.

Isn't it hard for a new customer to follow these discussions under "everything else"? It might be a good solution to open up a new Topic: "Stitching problems", "Stiching Software", "How to stitch to the web" or something like this?

Following the forum since some time ago, i realize that there seem to be two problems to use your good product like "plug and play": NNP settings for camera lens combination, second: how to get rid of stitching problems having taken the fotos.

A time ago i found a comment on the second point: go to www...... and the forum. You yourself gave a comment that people like to "plug and play". I myself sometimes feel like this. So i'd like to ask you, would it be a good idea to open up new topics on the forum for the day after, .... the day after i am happy to recieve the Nodal Ninja hardware, go out to take fotos, and end up to be disappointed with the result of my "what goes wrong that i do not have a brilliant pano?" .

What i feel following the forum for some time, it might be a good idea to open up a "second stage forum topics" to beware newbies to fall into frustration by working around with the fotos to get a nice pano.

You know there are a lot of experienced nodal ninians on the forum to give help to new customers.

I've been using FSPViewer with PTGui on my Vista 64 machine. Works better and faster than QT anyway. Easy to set up using the options dialog.

I haven't looked into the problem but I bet there is a batch converter somewhere that will turn your .mov files into something Flash can use.
