nikon d700 + afs24-70

Hello to all!

I'm a new NN5 owner and must say it works just fine (as you all know )

Anyway... since i didnt have any problems with setting up my d700 (no grip) with 14-24afs i do have some when swithing my lens to 24-70.

I'd like to take some shots at 50 (or even 70) but just can't find the right settings. Is the rail to short? Or i'm doing something wrong.

Did any of you guys figured out some numbers for this lens with d700?

Hi Blazko,

Might be it can help you when you get the settings from the D3. When you compare the settings D3 - D700 in the camera settings list, there is a difference around 6 to 7 mm more than for the D3: 14-24mm: 134/119 127/112 121/106.

The Settings for D3 and 24-70mm/f2.8 Serial Number 226560 are as follows: 24 140, 28 138, 35 128, 50 119, 70 124. Pay attention to the fact, that with this lens the front is moving while zooming.... ( 119 and then 124.. )

Ill try to test them out.
Tell me please where did you take the 6-7mm difference from ? It looks to me, that values given for a 14-24 differ by 15mm between d3 and d700 - am I missing something?

I have to agree, if a D3 with a 14-24mm lens yields to 14/119, 18/112, 24/106 AND if a D700 with the same 14/24mm lens yields to 14/137, 18/127, 24/121 then obviously, a D700 would require 15mm more than a D3, regardless of the lens.

Now, if Heinz is correct in the assessment that a D3 with a 24-70mm yields to 24/140, 28/138, 35/128, 50/119, 70/124 (by the way, is there any reference to these measurements? they're not posted on the NN camera setup page) then a D700 with a 24-70mm would yield to 24/155, 28/153, 35/143, 50/134, 70/139

Here's where the problem lies: while the upper rail is scaled still 160mm, when the base is added, I can slide it back to 149mm MAX. Effectively it could only use my zoom at 35mm, 50mm and 70mm focal length.

I would like to ask the community if folks with a D700 and a 24/70mm have encountered the same issue - and if an extension is necessary (T20?)

Research, research...

Historical:
We ended up with the following values for a 24-70mm f/2.8 + D700 Combo: (focal in mm/upper rail in mm) 24/155, 28/153, 35/143, 50/134, 70/139

I have tried these values to get the NPP for 70mm, 50mm and 35mm, it works great!

However, the camera mount NCP-1 can only slide up to 149mm on the upper rail. the question was: is a T20 extension necessary?

Update:
With Mauro's excellent help (NN Customer Support), I got a T20 extension shipped.

On that extension, the distance between the upper rail mount and the tripod camara mount is 30mm for the first mount and 40mm for the second mount. This is actually greater than the 12mm I originally thought I would get. Excellent news, indeed.

Whereas the NCP1 camera plate hits the upper rail at 149mm, the T20 hits the upper rail at 153.5mm. Add 30mm that's 183.5mm...more than enough - Life is good! I really want to keep this adapter.

I tested my D700 with the 24/70mm lens set at 24mm focal (after all, that was the whole point of the exercise, wasn't that?). 155mm - 30mm = 125mm on the upper rail...And Yes, I have a good position of no-parallax. Life becomes ultra-good!

Two comments though about the T20 (Mauro suggested I posted these):
1- The plastic ruler showing the offset between the tripod mount of the camera lens axis tends to bend as screw the T20 onto my camera. I believe an additional washer is needed between the tightening screw and that piece of transparent plastic so that a good tightening does not dislodge the plastic element.

2- I think a cork gasket between the camera and the T20 adapter would be more appropriate than the current rubber one. The D700 + 24/70mm combo is heavy and there is a bit of a twist, unfortunately (the lens tends to lean down...). One has to really tighten the screw (and that caused the transparent plastic element to twist).


Closing remarks:
- Excellent Customer Support...Thanks a million to Mauro Contrafatto for his help!!!
- 24/155, 28/153, 35/143, 50/134, 70/139 are the correct settings, I think, for the D700 + 24/70mm f/2.8 combo.
- You will need a T20 adapter at 24mm and 28mm focal.
- May I keep the adapter currently on my camera? Because I think it'll stay there!!!
- and of course... Life is good.
