the lines help to align the camera square to the lens axis. Many camera has horizontal lines/pattern at the base. Align the lines on the camera mounting plate to one of the line at the camera base. Then the camera mounting plate will be square to the camera base and lens axis.
This is a great suggestion from a customer who is an expert in panoramic hardware.
