Zentih and Nardir Ultimate R1 - Olympus E620 and Zuiko 8mm digital
I currently use the NN3 and RD16 rotator for my normal 360s which works fine but i want to have a play with pole photography and I am thinking of getting the ultimate R1 with ring for my Olympus E620 and Olympus Zuiko 8mm digital lens, however i want to be sure that i will be able to get the zenith and nadirs OK. Does anyone envisage any problems using this setup for this as i have seen some comments on this forum about issues with taking the zeniths and nadirs and the cameras fitting or knocking against the support with other brands, any help would be greatly appreciated as it an investment and I want to make sure I am getting the right kit.
Thanks
Neil

for outdoor panos and pole panos. R1 is fine. Need some work in patching nadir and zenith.
I am releasing a lock which allows you to lock R1 into +/-90 deg and +/-60 deg. For pole panos, off-set from NPP is not critical.

hi Nick, thanks for that, would the 8mm not cover the zenith if i angle it enough or is the FOV just not great enough? Thanks Neil

8mm on 4/3 sensor is full frame fisheye. There is a large hole at the zenith and nadir. You have NN3. Why not make a single row pano and check the size of zenith hole?

Hi.
Here is a pano shot with Olympus E-520 with Zuiko 8mm fisheye used with R1 and EZ leveler on top of a Frankenstein tripod.

It was tilted 10° down, and one shot 90°up where I raise the center column to make up for the tilting, having drilled a hole in the column and putting a pin through the holes... brings the camera to the correct height in a few seconds... and moving the tripod the few cm's that are needed is normally ok... but can be made better I'm sure.
All in all: R1 is a perfect tool for both outside and inside jobs, especially when the camera height can be regulated as quickly as I do it with the zenith shot.
The only thing that might become an "issue" with R1, is the nadir shot, but until now I have not had any situation I haven't been able to photoshop over, or cover the hole with a nadir cap with a couple of clicks in Flashificator.
I will be changing over to shooting with my E-3 + Zuiko 8mm on the R1 as soon as I remember to get me some radio remote controls for it... that I have to order from other parts of the world.

Hi Trausti
thanks for that, you have set my mind at rest and i can feel happy now so i will go ahead and order one as i want to try out the new poles when they become available and was a little worried it wouldnt work.
why is there an issue with the nadir shot is it because there is not enough room to swing the camera round and down and shoot through the centre of the tripod as in the NN3?
I assume you can do a freehand shot and just blend and warp it in in photoshop later?
thanks for your help.

Glad to have been of help. One thing is certain: You WILL be very happy with the R1. It is like magic :001_smile:
I have not tried to get a Nadir shot with it mounted on the tripod... so I really don't know how hard or easy it would be.. but assume it could be done (?) Anyone here who can put a light on the issue?

Not yet. I ordered my R1 with Vincèn last week for my Olympus E-3 + Zuiko 8 mm.
As soon as it arrives I will give it a try and post the results.
