Just got my new upgrade knob today. Its a nice improvement!
And the mounting surface is flat, unlike the older one which had
the tension screw sticking out a bit which was difficult to use
with my (arca swiss) plates.

How do you keep the Arca clamp from rotating on the upper arm?

I had a Markins clamp first for the upper arm as well, but the clamp was not parallel aligned to the arm
(the clamp is not a solid block and has some hollow areas which caused the misaligment because it was
not sitting flat on the arm).
But the clamp had a stop which was convienent. Anyway, the Arca-Swiss clamp sits flat on the arm now.
The Q3 is nice, but when its very cold the ball gets a little bit stuck when rotating.
It gets sometimes in the way when I'm out for some astro photos, but not a real problem.

My Markins M10 has the larger QS-60 clamp that looks wide enough to mount on my NN5L arms. But I glued it on with semi-permanent Locktite and do not remove it. I am hoping Nick will release a *one-piece* camera plate with Arca clamp that will mount both ways on the arm. This will allow it to be used with both camera plates and lens plates.
My Markins M10 also sticks sometimes, usually from dust and moisture inside. It sticks more in cold weather. At first, I thought it was going to be a big problem, but it is very easy to fix. Try this...
- Fully loosen the large tension knob.
- Place 2-3 drops of WD-40 on a lint-free cloth. (DO NOT apply WD-40 directly to the ball, it can run down inside the ballhead)
- Use the damp cloth area to clean the ball while rotating several times in all directions.
- Finish by cleaning and rotating with a dry area on the cloth.
- Readjust your tension knob.
Now you blue Q3 will work like new again!
This procedure is recommended by Markins and works very well.

I have a similar Arca-Swiss clamp on my NN3...but I use an L-Bracket from Really Right Stuff. Clamp's handle faces forward and is located under lens. I also have an Arca-Swiss rail on the bottom of my NN3 with another Arca-Swiss clamp on my Arca-Swiss ballhead for easy removal/installation.
Sounds like a lot of contraptions...but it's really easy to use and is steady.
I'll get some pics up when I have time.
My setup uses a 1.75" Kirk clamp with an adapter plate I made to register with the upper arm and the bottom of the clamp. Works very nicely and is compact.

Just ordered the upgrade knob for my NN3. :001_smile:
Here is my setup. In use is a Quick Release plate by RRS, 60mm x 50mm, 3/8" thread.
On top of Giottos MT 9170 tripod is a Newtech 2.5" Quick Release Clamp.
In the picture is the NN3 secured against twisting.
My chopsticks-solution for shots of the Nadir,when the boom
of the Giottos tripod is in horizontal position.

What specific model Arca-Swiss clamp are you using?
I am looking for a new clamp and plate that is thin enough for my D80 with Sigma 10-20mm,
and like the idea of a clamp design that will be around for a long time.
It's difficult to decide without shopping in person.

My post from yesterday got deleted, but you can use the Kirk clamp with an adapter plate you can make yourself. You need some 1/8" aluminum plate, with one piece cut to fit inside the upper arm and another to bridge the two sides. With 5 minute epoxy glue the two together. I cut some pieces that key into the bottom of the Kirk clamp and glued those to the assembly. This prevents any rotation, so you can loosen the clamp and move it for a variety of lenses. This works for my D80, with the advantage that the NN3 still fits inside the case!

The clamp is quite thin and if you are not at the end position on the lower arm with your upper arm, you should be fine.
(The clamp adds some space between the arm and the camera and you have to offset this by moving the arm to an outer position.)

My NN3 arrived today. Hurray!
With the square washer attached to my clamp + plate, the camera is at the end of both rails.
That's an eyeball measurement. After taking some photos I'll see if this will work.
waters: thanks for sharing your setup, how did you cut the aluminum to fit the bottom of the clamp?
and is it easy to turn the clamp handle?

I cut the aluminum plate on my tablesaw, but it will also cut with a bandsaw, albeit with more filing afterwards. The " keys " that fit the bottom of the Kirk clamp were cut with the bandsaw and filed to fit. The clamp handle isn't too hard to turn. A little awkward, but the trade off is worth the space savings.
