How heavy is the 50D? I've got a 7D with the 15-85mm lens and I wouldn't use that with the NN3. For what it's worth, here's my settings for the 7D with the NN5:

    Canon 7D NPP
    15-85mm on NN5
    Lower 53
    Upper 102
    Badders

Thanks for your help. The 50D body weight is 25.7 oz vs 28.9 for the 7D so pretty much the same. I am
debating whether to go for the NN5 or NN3. I realize the NN5 is the safer bet, but it is more $$.

I am not much for spending other people's money... but you should seriously consider going with NN5..

          I'd follow the advices above.

Using the Nikon D90, 21.87 oz works fine on the NN3. But you are on the heavier side.

Saving money in the beginning might end up in changing equipment later on, which is more expansive. In some cases the upper rail of the NN3 with heavier weights tends to move.

I would go for the NN5 as well.
