I am trying to understand, in very simple terms, the difference between the NN3 and the NN5. I have a Nikon D90, a Tokina 12-24mm lens, and I would like to eventually be doing the spherical (360 degrees) panos.

NN5 is much larger and stronger than NN3II, about 40mm longer in each rail. It supports full rotation for zenith shot. no 90 deg zenith shot is possible on NN3II. But the lens is wide enough to cover the zenith. If you get the NN3II, make sure you upgrade to R-D8/16 to increase the headroom for upward rotation.
