Question about R10 static head...

  • Question about R10 static head...

    The base plate/mount on the R10 has two countersunk holes for attaching to an R series rotator. If one wants to screw the R10 directly to a monopod or pole of some kind, one has to purchase and additional piece of hardware called the Nodal Ninja Ultimate R1/R10 Pole Adapter. That piece has a central threaded hole that can screwed onto a monopod or pole and then the R10 is screwed onto that adapter.

    Wouldn't it be simpler in many cases to just put a threaded hole in the center of the base plate/mount so that the R10 can be screwed directly to a monopod or pole without adding more hardware at the top of the monopod or pole?

      Oh, so there is a threaded hole in the base plate of the R10 and your images don't show it????

        It has one if you buy an R10 with advanced rotator R-D4 that can be screwed on any regular tripod/poles. If you remove the R-D4 (useless at top of pole), and use R10 alone on top of pole, you'll need to add the little pole adapter (there are two screws to attach R10 on R-D4 so it can't be adapter directly on top of a tripod/pole ! that's why the use of that little adapter !

          That was my point. So there is no threaded hole in the bottom of the R10 that can be used to screw the R10 directly to a monopod or pole. Right? One has to use that extra piece of hardware just to screw the R10 to the monopod or pole?

          Rotators are unnecessary on monopods/poles. Just twist the monopod/pole.

            Right, considering how the bottom part of R1/R10 is built, it can't include in the middle an extra threaded hole, part would be then too fragile !

            well if you want to be really precise, it might be a good help one pole rotator at bottom of pole, I like to use it when I shot pole panoramas in ski lift as with tilting of lift sometimes you are not so sure of angle you turned the pole !

              Nonsense. The camera and lens weigh a couple of pounds at most. Unless the base plate is made from cheap plastic, there would be no problem whatsoever. What an extra hole in the bottom would do is make things simpler and less complicated.

              well if you want to be really precise, it might be a good help one pole rotator at bottom of pole, I like to use it when I shot pole panoramas in ski lift as with tilting of lift sometimes you are not so sure of angle you turned the pole !

              There is absolutely no need to be precise in the rotation. You can do as many shots as you want and they don't even have to be spaced evenly around the circle. All you have to do is make sure the pole is vertical. That's the important vector.

                Just have a look at pictures of R1/R10, you'll see it's too narrow to add an extra hole in the middle of the base :(

                It depends of process, but you are right, often you can turn approximately by yourself the pole ;)

                    Yes R10 HAS a 3/8" threaded socket at the center of the base part, which aligns with rotation axis of RD4. NPP is maintained with and without a rotator.

                        Sorry for the confusion, I was convinced R10 had no central hole as the R1, so we both learned something today :)
