View Full Version : How does he do it?

Bill Bailey pointed me to the 360Cities site, and I have been looking at it ever since.

One of the photographers on the site is a guy called Jook Leung. He does these amazing night time panoramas, that do not appear to be HDR. Or if they are, he somehow manages to get people in motion in them without much apparent ghosting or even much blurring. He has one of the Las Vegas strip that he took from a moving convertible.

I would just like to know how he does this. I suppose it could be very high ISO and some powerful noise reduction and single-image HDR from RAW images. Or it could be that he oh-so-carefully blends his images manually.

What do you think?

Hey Wick - welcome to the forum
Yes Jook does some incredible stuff. I would guess in this shot (car was stationary) he shot maybe 3 around using one his his Nikon 6mm lens. It also appears he may have had his tripod pole setup at an angle and didn't shoot vertically like many do.

You do not need to do any HDR for this. Just learn to use your Raw images efficiently.

Jook uses a 5D MarkII and a shaved Tokina 10-17mm same as I do. Thats 3-4 images around
He used to to use the old Nikkor 8mm and most of his older panos are with that.
You can see all his NewYears panoramas here, in my new presentation of them

and there are a lot more at panoramas.dk for example this one

He also uses a similar monopod/tripod combination as I do inspired by my first one which I used back in 2005

I also know he today sometimes use a VRDrive so that he can move away from the tripod a little while shooting.
Look in the one above and you find him half hidden.

I use my tripod monopod combination for everything today. I can reach 2.5 meters height easy and I can just use the monopod alone and use it handheld in any angle.
It also makes it very easy to take the nadir perfect.

Got it from the vrmag.com Venice article: Manfrotto 682B Monopod
