Does the R1 lock in the 90 deg. position?

Nope. To reach the +90¬? offset position, the locking knob is disengaged.

Thanks for your reply. When rotated to the 90 deg. ( zenith ) position, there is no way to keep the camera from rotating? Are people eyeballing 90 deg., or using a hot shoe level?

For some cameras, 90 deg is not possible. camera bumps into the vertical rail. Something about 80-90 deg is possible. When camera is rotated at -65 deg and +90 deg, the weight of camera will keep it fixed at those position. These positions should not be used on the pole and very windy location.
